Hunters Score Their First Win In The Opening Round Of The 2017 Intrust Cup Season

Saturday, 04 March 2017 by John Ten

PNG Hunters

Capras, Ken TOFILAU, opened proceedings in front of his home crowd at Rockhampton with an uncoverted try 8 minutes into the match.

Ase Boas scored the first points in the Hunters 2017 Intrust Cup Championship campaign with a penalty goal, unconverted try at the 16th minute and a converted try at the 28th minute.

…

HALF TIME SCORE: PNG Hunters 12 vs Capras 4.

2ND HALF: Hunters looked set to continue the first half assault, with William Aquila scoring again just three minutes into the second half. The try was scored off a pin-point Bland Abavu kick into the corner. Boas missed the conversion. PNG 16 vs Capras 4.

But the Hunters took their foot off the pedal and Capras scored off a play from an earlier Kirisome break, Tofilau going in to for his second try for the day. PNG 16 vs Capras 8.

Silly penalties costing PNG positional play, and some half-hearted Hunters defence resulting in another Capras try. Tofilau bagging his first hat-trick for the season. PNG 16 vs Capras 12.

At the 57 minute mark, Capras scored again. The last three tries were scored on exactly the same blade of grass. This time Justin Tavae scored the four pointer. Same Hunters defensive players conceding the line.

The score was locked up at 16 all with 21 minutes to go.

With 11 minutes to go, Boas kicked a penalty goal to put Hunters 2 points in front. PNG 18 vs Capras 16.

The last ten minutes was characterised by both teams pressuring the other. Boas peppering the tryline with some beautifully placed kicking, but the Hunters were unable to capitalise.

It was Willie Minoga in the dying minutes of the game who made a crucial break, of an individual play, who scored the game winning try. Boas missing the kick.

FULLTIME SCORE: PNG Hunters 22 vs Capras 16.

My man of the match goes to Ase Boas. His kicking game proving the difference in a game where the Capras failed to convert a single try. His on field kicking game also demonstrated clear thinking and strategic maturity, which kept the pressure on the opposition.

If the Hunters are to make a concerted effort at making this Championship theirs they are going to have to work on creating a more disciplined, more aggressive defensive line, clean up the error count and learn not to nod off mid-game.

PNG Hunters Kick Off their Intrust Cup Season Tonight

Saturday, 04 March 2017 by John Ten

2017 Intrust Cup Launch

The new look 2017 PNG Hunters kick off their Intrust Cup season tonight against the Central Queensland Capras. The Hunters will be hosted by the Capras at Browne Park with game scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.

Much has been said about Coach Mark Marum’s off-season approach to ensuring that the Hunters are as fit and in-form as possible, and it will be interesting to see how that has both hardened the defensive line up and tightened up a more cohesive attacking unit.

I for one am looking forward to the Hunters play, that distinctive PNG flamboyance is always a delight to watch.

Let’s hope the PNG Hunters can go the distance in 2017 and capture that elusive QLD Intrust Cup Championship victory!

Kokomos Reps Tyler Han & Jesse Braslin Rep Murri 16 Team

Friday, 10 February 2017 by John Ten

By QRL Media

Interstate rivalry will be on display tonight when the Queensland Under 16 Murri side face off against the NSW Under 16 Koori side in Newcastle.

The two teams will play as part of the Awabakal All Stars Interstate Challenge at 6pm NSW time; while the bill will also see Queensland Murri Carnival winners the Cherbourg Hornets play the Redfern All Blacks.
The Indigenous All Stars and World All Stars men’s and women’s games will be played tomorrow night at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Queensland Under 16 Murri coach Jim Stevens said the boys have been soaking up the atmosphere of the All Stars celebrations which also included a combined lunch with the Koori side and the NRL Indigenous All Stars team yesterday.
“This week has been fantastic,” Stevens said.
“It was a great thing for the boys to have their jerseys presented by the Indigenous All Stars.”
While the whole squad have been making the most of the opportunity to take part in many of cultural activities that have become a centrepiece of the NRL All Stars celebrations, they have also been training hard in anticipation of a tough match.
“This game will be played with the same New South Wales v Queensland rivalry as all the interstate games, for sure,” Stevens said.
“At the lunch, the boys were definitely sizing each other up,” he laughed.
One factor which has Stevens hopeful of seeing a strong performance from his young team is the fact they have been able to play together previously, having toured New Zealand at the end of last season, playing two games.
“The games in New Zealand put us on the front foot for this game,” he said.
“The boys have now played together and know each other.”
Over the past few years, this Murri v Koori game has proven to be highly competitive and a hard one to win, with the two teams playing out draws in four of the past seven years.
This was the case last season where the two rivals were forced to share the spoils with a 16-16 score which resulted the Queensland Murri side retaining the shield, having last won in 2014.
Stevens also said he wished to express his gratitude to the Newcastle Knights NRL club who had made the boys feel welcome.
“The Knights have been fantastic and have been letting us use their facilities to prepare,” Stevens said.
A rule change this year means all 20 players named in the squad will have the opportunity to play, with the unlimited interchange in place for the game.
