The Queensland PNG team won the Men’s Opens division with an entertaining victory over Samoa.

WHILE the official Four Nations kicked off at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium at the weekend – further south – another four nations tournament was also being played.

This year’s Queensland Pacific Island Cultural Carnival was staged at Beenleigh’s Bill Norris Oval with locally-based teams representing Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands and Tonga playing across three days.

The Men’s Open final closed the event and saw two contrasting styles of play – with the power game of the Samoa team up against the quick ball movement of the PNG side.

After two entertaining halves – it was the PNG side who prevailed 28-24, with the talented Joe Bond a standout for his side.

Despite the Opens loss – Samoa supporters still went home with a smile on their face – with the nation claiming the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 titles.

The full results from the three days of competition are listed below:

Full Carnival results – Day 1, Day 2, Day 3

Finals games results – Under 14, Under 16, Under 18, Open Mens

The QPICC event was sanctioned by the Queensland Rugby League and received support from the SEQ Division, with the provision of referees and touch judges, administration assistance and resource support.
