MATCH REPORT: Rd 21 Dolphins v PNG Hunters

Sunday, 30 July 2017 by John Ten
Round 21 Intrust Super Cup – LIVE
Redcliffe Dolphins v PNG Hunters
1:40 pm Kick Off

Dolphin Oval

PRE-MATCH COMMENTARY

#PNGHunters are on top of the ladder going into Rd 21 of the 25 Rd #intrustsupercup Minor Premiership. They take on the 4th placed Dolphins.

The in form Dolphins will be keen to test themselves against the current leaders in the run up to the finals.

The Hunters will need full focus and disciplined defence for the full 80 minutes to ensure that the Dolphins don’t turn this into a try scoring fest.

Players to watch for the #PNGHunters include Captain, Ase Boas, whose strategic kicking game is one of the best in the #intrustsupercup.

The #PNGHunters ‘Excitement Machine’, Adex Wera, is also one to watch.

#PNG fans want to watch #PHINS Centre, Thompson Teteh, who’ll be keen to put his case to Kumul selectors, for a spot in the World Cup squad.

Ase Boas is currently 3rd highest point scorer (162) in #intrustsupercup behind Carlin Anderson (196), and Guy Hamilton (177).

FIRST HALF – Kicked Off!

#PNGHunters give away the first penalty. The kick puts #PHINS 20m out.

A last tackle kick to the wing by the PHINS was knocked on by PNG giving the #PHINS a repeat set resulting a try to Joseph Bradley just 6 minutes into the game. Tyson Gamble kicked the two.

#PHINS 6 v #PNG 0

Boas coughed up the ball just five metres out, giving possession back to the #PHINS.

Watson Boas spills an offload from Puara ten metres out.

Gamble knocks on an Ase Boas kick resulting in a scrum 10m out.

The Dolphins are reading the Ase Boas kicking game and are ready for it. Boas may have to mix it up.

Ase Boas puts another kick through on the last but it is too deep and goes over the dead ball line.

Curtis Johnson kicks high. Troy Giess is under it & scores for #PHINS! Tyson Gamble kicks his second two pointer for the day.
#PHINS 12 v #PNGHunters 0

#PNGHunters broken defence allows #PHINS in again. 16 nil with a kick to come & 10 left to play in the 1st half.

Daniel Bridge is the try Redcliffe tryscorer. Tyson Gamble makes it 3 from 3.

PHINS 18 v PNG 0

#PNGHunters concede a penalty in front the goal posts and Tyson Gamble takes the score to #PHINS 20 v #PNG 0

HALFTIME SCORE: #PHINS 20 v #PNGHunters 0

HALFTIME COMMENTARY:

PNG Coach, Mark Marum, won’t be happy with the distinct lack of energy, effort and discipline being displayed by his players. The lack of discipline in the Hunters defensive line has been a problem over the last five or six weeks and has slowly eroded each week. In the past few weeks the Hunters efforts have been somewhat sporadic, with the Hunters letting games slide and seemingly just doing just enough.

Given that the Final series commences in just five weeks, it is a problem that will need to be arrested now. How the PNG Hunters come back in the second half of this game is critical to their 2017 finals’ chances.

SECOND HALF Kicks Off at Dolphin Oval! GO HUNTERS!

#PHINSvPNG #intrustsupercup
#PNGHunters 0 v #PHINS 20

#PNGHunters have Willie Minoga undergoing HIA protocol and has been replaced.

Redcliffe start the second half on fire and have scored a try just 2 minutes into the second half. Miles Taueli the try scorer and Tyson Gamble continues his perfect kicking record.

PHINS 26 v PNG 0

PNG defensive line conceding 10 – 20m every #PHINS play the ball.
PNG attack scrappy. #Hunters are struggling right across the park.

Stargroth Amean SCORES! #PNGHunters put their 1st points on the board at 56mins into the game. Ase Boas adds the much needed extras!
#PHINS 26 v PNG 6

18 mins left to play in the second half. Stargroth Amean is in for his second.

PHINS 26 v PNG 10 with a kick to come.

Boas scrapes in the kick!

#PHINS 26 v #PNG 12

Isreal Eliab has crossed the line but the ref has gone to the video ref with a call of no try.
#PHINSvPNG #intrustsupercup

Video referee confirms ref’s call of no try. Claims Eliab knocked on. Commentators are blowing up.

9 mins left to play.
#PNGHunters 12 v #PHINS 26

#PNGHunters stripped the ball on the line in front of the goal posts. Gamble adds 2 for the #PHINS.
#PHINSvPNG 28 v 12 #intrustsupercup

Wellington loses the ball in the tackle on the line & with it any chance of improving the score line. Eliab also drops the ball on the line!

FULL TIME SCORE: #PHINSvPNG 28 v 12

FULL TIME COMMENTARY:

This is the intrust Super Cup and to play and win at this level, you must bring your A game, both in attack, and defense. You must play with intensity, energy, discipline and focus for the full 80 mins and you have to be doing this week in, week out to win championships.

You can’t be zoning in and out, you can’t just switch on for five or ten minutes and expect your brilliant attacking flair alone to win at this level.

You need to have the mental strength to tough out the big games, and sadly, the PNG Hunters have not demonstrated any real engagement with the task at hand for some weeks.

Let’s hope for the PNG faithful that Marum can marshall his troops and turn it around before the 2017 Intrust Cup final series! They have faith that the PNG Hunters can still put their first Intrust Super Cup Trophy in their cabinet this year!

Go the Hunters!

A Huge Thank You to All The Ladies in League

Sunday, 23 July 2017 by John Ten

To all the ‘Ladies in League’, (and enormously happy to include all the ladies who now play) I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ for all you add to the game and our kids lives.

I don’t think anyone quite understands the level of commitment, the sacrifices, and dedication of the women involved in the game. The thankless hours, the early mornings, the late nights, the meetings, the set up and preparation time, the clean ups, the planning, the paperwork. And that is just what I …can think of off the top of my head.

Week in, week out, they lay a vital platform for all of our kids to enjoy the sport they love so much. They give structure to our clubs which would not function without their support and they demonstrate to our kids the all important foundational life lessons about what it is to give back to your community.

One thing is certain. Our children’s lives would be less rich without your tireless support.

As a very appreciative footy mum, I salute all the Ladies in League. xx

Coach: Michael Marum,

PNG Hunters are currently leading the championship despite coming in off a loss last week. Missing the Magic Boot, Ase Boas, who was absent due to an ankle injury, the Hunters lost to the last placed, Tweed.

Stargroth Amean is out with a hamstring injury and Bland Abavu slots into fullback.

The shock loss at home, and the return of Ase Boas should see the Hunters fight to retain their championship lead this week in what should be a tough game against Northern Pride.

FIRST HALF:

Strap yourselves in! RD 16 #PRIDEvPNG #intrustcup match at Barlow Park, Cairns has kicked off!

#PNG have started slowly & a dropped ball on their own line saw Connor Jones score an easy try for Pride.
#PRIDEvPNG 6 v 0

Northern Pride opened up the Hunters left hand side and were lucky to stop what was a certain try.

Sheldon Powe-Hobbs scores #PRIDE’s 2nd try in the 1st 7mins.
#PRIDEvPNG 12 v 0

Rain is now playing a role with both teams making unforced errors.

A big hit from Karo Kauna Jr. caused #PRIDE to cough up the ball and Wartova Paura grounded it for #PNG
#PRIDEvPNG 12 v 4

#PNGHunters Lawrence Tu’u looks to have suffered a serious knee injury and is being taken off the field. Later update: It is an ankle injury.

9mins to half time.

HALF TIME: PRIDE 12 v PNG 4

HALF TIME COMMENTS:

Once again PNG defence, combined with unforced handling errors, in wet weather conditions, have cost PNG. Northern Pride started fast but the latter stages of the first half had Pride showing signs of fatigue with the Hunters gaining momentum.

PNG need to re institute a disciplined and aggressive defensive line, clean up the handling errors and keep the penalties down to a minimum. Combined with that much loved PNG flamboyance in attack, it could put the Hunters right back in the game in the second half.

SECOND HALF:

#PNGHunters racking up the penalties against them. Right now they look to be out of sorts.
#intrustsupercup #PRIDEvPNG 14 v 4

#PNGHunters put in a set of 5 one up plays and a kick. That isn’t going to cut it.
#intrustsupercup #PRIDEvPNG 14 v 4

TRY TIME to Bland Abavu! Boas adds the all important 2 points!
#intrustsupercup #PRIDEvPNG 14 v 10

Israel Eliab hits the line at pace and scores a try. A tied ball game with a kick to come!
#intrustsupercup #PRIDEvPNG 14 v 14

Ase Boas add the much needed extras and puts the Hunters in front!

Pride 14 v PNG 16 with 6 to go!

PNGHunters earn the penalty in front and Ase Boas puts it straight through the posts!
#intrustsupercup #PRIDEvPNG 14 v 18

FULL TIME SCORE:

And that, thankfully for the #PNGHunters is the full time siren in today’s #intrustsupercup
#PRIDEvPNG 14 v 18
#PNGKumuls #QLDPNGKokomos

FULL TIME COMMENTARY:

The Hunters looked at sixes and sevens in the second half and strangely abandoned their normal flamboyant attack totally and played sets of six, with five one-up runs and a kick on the last.

Their best plays were when they shifted the ball wide and fast, PNG-style! A win is a win but the Hunters certainly won that one the hard way!
